It is in the treatment of animals as characters where the performing arts show most clearly the essence of theatricality. It is not only the presence of these fabulous animals which for centuries have shaped the fantastic imagination of our culture and which owe their existence to this inexhaustible creative capacity, but also the small domestic animals with which we live everyday, the insects, different kinds of birds, reptiles, mammals and fish ...
The exhibition reinforces the presence of animals in the performing arts: principally theatre, opera and dance. A journey from Greco-Roman times to the present, passing through historical vanguards, the Russian Ballets, etc …, through a selection of photographs, figurines and miniature theatres highlighting the recreation of several key works in which animals play a fundamental role using the original costumes from the various shows. This exposition was born from an exhibition in 2006, the exhibition celebrated the opening of the Museo Nacional de Escenografía y Vestuario de Moulins (CNCS), 75% of the pieces on display were provided by the museum. The remainder has been sourced from works at the following institutions: Institut del Teatre of Barcelona, Museo Nacional del Teatro de Almagro, Fundación Federico García Lorca and the Museum of Dance in Stockholm.
