May I? Yes, because nobody's here. Nobody? Well, there's someone, but it's as if there were nobody. Hey! How's it going? What are you doing here? Wasting your time, right? You'll say otherwise, but I think you are. What? Ah! Well, that's why... Why I'm here? Because I've been sent here. Who? The old lady. What should I bring? The lady's dinner, because it's Saturday and tonight she has to keep watch. Why does she have dinner while keeping watch? Because she won't keep watch without having dinner. Does it seem wrong that she keeps watch? For me too. But can we do anything about it? Ah! Well, that's why... And now to leave it all ready and to her liking. Am I doing it too quickly? It's my temperament. But, am I doing it wrong? Right? Ah! Well, that's why..."
Enrique Jardiel Poncela is a surprising character due to his ups and downs, his enormous literary output, his refreshing sense of humour and the great successes and failures that he amassed, both in life and after his death. His epitaph sums it up, not without a pinch of reproach and dark humour: “If you’re looking for the greatest eulogy, you go and die”. “Eloisa is under an almond tree” is considered one of his best works. His hilarious situations and loopy characters create a comical portrait of how the absurd transcends the barriers of time, making it a comedy theatre classic.
Jardiel creates a screwball comedy, mixing together all the must-have ingredients: an oddball family, an extravagant butler, doubles, missing women, secret hiding places and domestic animals. Everything is to an excess: too many characters, too many parallel plots, too many explanations. The viewer doesn’t know what to think.
