Why does the child want to leave with the flutist if he is so bad to him, if he forces the child to do things he doesn´t want to do, if he abuses him? Maybe because there is nothing for him at home. Perhaps because of ignorance or selfishness, not trying is also a deadly sin that everyone, absolutely everyone, has committed sometime in their lives, against childhood.
“Why do the children leave?” asks one of the few innocent characters from “The crusade of the street children”, but we do not ask us why, we already know the answer. Our question is, where do they go? Do they have a future? This is a work that we wish never had to be written because its non existence signifies the absence of a true shame on our society: it shows the vileness and unworthiness of human beings, be they ambitious adults, the corrupt, the contemptible in their misery or child abusers.
A clamour of children’s voices rising from the gutters seeping into the cracks of the heart: cries of girls who have been blinded, raped, the voices of abused children, those mutilated in the trade of healthy organs, the missing, the murdered. Boys and girls that scream and flee. To share their crusade today is our obligation, our duty.
